    Rosenholm triumphs

Swedish qualifier Patrik Rosenholm couldn't quite enjoy his maiden victory at this level and the emotions that come with it, for the second seed Vishnu Vardhan, his opponent in the final of the KCG Verghese memorial ITF Futures tennis tournament on Saturday, conceded the match after twisting his right ankle badly in the first set.

When the incident happened, Vishnu was leading 6-5, and Patrik was serving in the 12th game with the score at deuce. “This is not the way I would have wanted to win. My first ITF men's Futures title here would obviously be memorable,” said the Swede, who had lost in the first round both in Chandigarh and Noida as a qualifier.

“In the three weeks, Chennai, for me, stands out more for my ability to withstand the humid conditions better than most players and be mentally focused,” he added.

    Vishnu was philosophical in defeat.

“These things happen in tennis. It's OK. It's always tough to play in Chennai with its humid weather conditions. I would have got the tag ‘ITF Player of the Month'. I am a little bit upset that I will not get it,” said Vishnu, who had won the two earlier legs in Chandigarh and Noida.

With heavy breeze, both players found the conditions difficult to handle. Patrik took a 2-0 lead, breaking Vishnu's serve in the first game, to race to a 3-1 lead.

But Vishnu, with his serves and ground strokes getting better, caught up with the Swede.

Vishnu was playing so well from the baseline that he had as many as three set points in the 10th game on Patrik's serve, but he failed to convert any of them.

Vishnu had his fourth set point in the 12th game. Down 30-40, Patrik wrong-footed Vishnu, the Indian made an effort to change direction to his right and fell down.

He writhed in pain and after medical attention, informed the chair umpire Suprit that he couldn't continue.

Patrik took home $1,300 and 18 ATP points while Vishnu got $900 (12 points). Ashok Verghese, Director, Hindustan University, gave away the prizes.

The next ITF men's Futures begins in Manipal on May 24 followed by two legs in New Delhi.

The scores: Final: Patrik Rosenholm (Swe) bt Vishnu Vardhan (Ind) 6-5 (conceded) .

Gade, Lee set up dream final

Peter Gade will attempt to turn the clock back when he plays World's top-ranked Lee Chong Wei on Sunday.

The former World No. 1 from Denmark knows only too well that the Malaysian will be the favourite for the men's singles title in the $200,000 India Open Super Series badminton championship. With less pressure, Gade is keen to improve his 1-10 head-to-head record against Lee.

On Saturday, the men's semifinals expectedly turned out to be one-sided with Gade, who last held the World No. 1 spot in 2006, and Lee setting up their much-awaited clash by posting straight-game victories.

Gade, 34, scored his seventh successive win over sixth-seeded Korean Park Sung Hwan 21-15, 21-19 in 45 minutes. The Dane, who comfortably won the first game after breaking away from 3-3, faced some resistance in the second.

Park bounced back from 6-12 to close the gap. But Gade used his experience to keep the shuttle in play, waited for the right time to execute the finishing stroke and gradually moved to 19-15. Once again, a gritty Park kept fighting and came within a point of catching up with Gade but could do no more.

“Park is a world class opponent and he beat Taufik Hidayat yesterday. So I had to play well to beat him. I am getting better and better with every match,” said Gade and continued in jest, “the pressure will be on Lee. Everyone says that he cannot lose to an old guy like me.”

    Lee has an edge

Lee, 28, will be the favourite to continue his domination of Gade. Lee has won their last six meetings in straight games. In January, Lee brushed aside Gade 21-9, 21-14 to win the Victor BWF Super Series.

The Malaysian, who needed just 27 minutes to dismiss the challenge of eighth-seeded Hong Kong player Hu Yun 21-11, 21-15, gave Gade his due.

“He is an experienced player and a great winner. I hope I can beat him here for the first super series title in India,” said Lee.

For the women's title, unseeded Thai girl Porntip Buranaprasertuk will take on third-seeded Korean Bae Youn Joo.

Porntip improved her head-to-head record against fourth seeded Hong Kong girl Yip Pui Yin to 3-2 after a 21-13, 21-8 triumph. The Thai girl stepped on the gas from 10-all in the first game and ran away with the match after opening up an 18-7 lead in the second.

A high number of unforced errors from Yip Pui Yin prevented the match from becoming a close contest.

    Stiff fight

If Porntip needed just 29 minutes to win, Bae Youn Joo required 62 minutes to tame a fighting Japanese Sayaka Sato 23-21, 15-21, 21-12 and maintain her unbeaten record in three meetings.

In the day's longest battle, Joo saved a game-point in the first game after Sayaka bounced back from 16-19. In the second, it was Sayaka all the way after breaking free at 9-all. The decider saw Joo zoom away to victory by winning the 11 out of the last 13 points, including the final six.

The results (semifinals, prefix denotes seeding):

Men: Singles: 1-Lee Chong Wei (Mas) bt 8-Hu Yun (Hkg) 21-11, 21-15; 3-Peter Gade (Den) bt 6-Park Sung Hwan (Kor) 21-15, 21-9. Doubles: 4-Hirokatsu Hashimoto & Noriyasu Hirata (Jpn) bt 1-Koo Kien Keat & Tan Bon Heong (Mas) 21-16, 21-19; Angga Pratama & Ryan Agung Saputra (Ina) bt 3-Alvent Yulianto Chandra & Hendra Aprida Gunawan (Ina) 21-23, 21-18, 21-14.

Women: Singles: Porntip Buranaprasertsuk (Tha) bt 4-Yip Pui Yin (Hkg) 21-13, 21-8; 3-Bae Youn Joo (Kor) bt Sayaka Sato (Jpn) 23-21, 15-21, 21-12. Doubles: 1-Miyuki Maeda & Satoko Suetsuna (Jpn) bt 4-Meiliana Jauhari & Greysia Polii (Ina) 25-23, 21-8; 2-Mizuki Fujii & Reika Kakiiwa (Jpn) bt Poon Lok Yan & Tse Ying Suet (Hkg) 21-17, 16-21, 21-16.

Mixed doubles: 4-Tantowi Ahmad & Lilyana Natsir (Ina) bt 7-Muhammad Rijal & Debby Susanto (Ina) 21-17, 15-9 (retd.); 3-Fran Kurniawan & Pia Zebadiah Bernadeth (Ina) bt 5-Peng Soon Chan & Liu Ying Goh (Mas) 21-12, 21-16 .

Passakorn Suwannawat defeats Aditya Mehta to bag Asian title

Strong-willed Thai cueist Passakorn Suwannawat beat home challenge Aditya Mehta to win the title in the Asian snooker championship at the Yeshwant Club here on Saturday.

    Suwannawat displayed a focused and skillful performance to outsmart 2008 runner-up Mehta 60 (33)-41, 0-77 (57), 76 (40)-20, 59-58, 69 (69)-66 (66), 24-87, 83 (70)-13, 72-61 in the best of 11-frame summit clash.

This was the maiden continental title for the 25-year-old Thai, who bagged the winner's purse of $3,500. Mehta got $1,750 as the runner-up. The losing semifinalists, Pankaj Advani and Mohammad Rais Senzahi, took home $500 each.

A product of the strong system in Thailand, Suwannawat dominated the match right from the start and fluently gathered some sound breaks to take a 2-1 lead by end of the third frame.

The closely-fought fourth and fifth frames were nothing but mental battles.

Mehta, with a cushion of 26 points in the fourth, could not achieve an important yellow pot after getting distracted by repeated movements in the spectator gallery.

Suwannawat did not waste the opportunity to win the frame by a solitary point.

    Dramatic

The next one was even more dramatic. Mehta put up a more determined show by collecting a break of 66.

But his one flaw, a missed red pot, allowed the pint-sized and stocky Thai to bulldoze his way to amass a frame-winning break of 69.

The contest again boiled down to who held the nerve better. When the eighth frame was poised evenly, Suwannawat, the player with limited expressions, exhibited his deft cuework to force Mehta commit four fouls.

Still, the Indian gave Suwannawat a close chase until the Thai found the chance to clear the black and emerge as the champion.

Meanwhile, Asian Confederation of Billiard Sports (ACBS) president Sindhu Pulsirivong announced that both Suwannawat and Mehta had qualified for the world snooker championship.

Mr. Pulsirivong also informed that on the basis of the performances in the Asian championship, three countries — India, Pakistan and Afghanistan — had been chosen to represent the continent in the revived snooker World Cup, to be held in Thailand from May 11 to 17.

Vinci rallies to win Barcelona Open over Hradecka

Roberta Vinci won her second Barcelona Open title in three years by rallying to beat Czech player Lucie Hradecka 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 on Saturday.

The 42nd-ranked Vinci extended her record on the Barcelona clay to 14-1 and made it three straight Italian winners in the Catalan capital after Francesca Schiavone won here last year.

"I love Barcelona - I always play well here in this beautiful city," Vinci said after earning her fourth career title.

Sixth-seeded Vinci broke six times as unseeded Hradecka was troubled on her serve which provided four aces but also six double faults.

Hradecka hadn't dropped a set all week in reaching the final in contrast to Vinci, who needed to rally from a first-set deficit for the second straight match to win.

Watson and Simpson in tie for New Orleans lead

Bubba Watson got up and down from a greenside bunker to birdie the last and hold a share of the lead with fellow American Webb Simpson after Saturday's third round of the New Orleans Classic.

Left-hander Watson, who had been one stroke ahead overnight, splashed out to five feet at the par-five 18th and coolly sank the putt for a two-under-par 70 at the TPC Louisiana.

That gave the long-hitting American a 12-under total of 204, putting him level with Simpson who had reeled off five consecutive birdies from the third on the way to a flawless 67.

At one point, Simpson led the field by two on another hot and breezy day in Louisiana but he failed to make any birdies on the back nine before being caught by Watson's late surge.

"I got off to a pretty good start with those five birdies in a row, and I even had a chance at eight for birdie," Simpson, 25, said in a television interview.

"But the way the wind blows out here and the golf course is firming up, I knew pars were a good score on the back nine. I wish I could have gotten more but, all in all, a solid day."

American John Rollins carded a 69 to finish alone in third at 11 under, a stroke better than six players including his compatriot Steve Stricker (68), Australian Matt Jones (69) and South Korea's K.J. Choi (67).

Britain's Luke Donald, who could become world number one with victory this week, returned a 70 to end the day five shots off the pace.

    Del Potro triumphs

Juan del Potro defeated Spain's Fernando Verdasco 6-2, 6-2 at the Estoril Open for his first title on clay in three years here on Sunday.

Del Potro's title was his second of the season after winning on hard court in Delray Beach, Florida, in February. The Argentine missed much of 2010 after a wrist surgery.

    No stopping Djokovic

In Belgrade, Novak Djokovic defeated Feliciano Lopez 7-6(4), 6-2 to win the Serbia Open on Sunday. This was Djokovic's 27th straight victory and fifth title this season.

The Australian Open champion was not always at his best in a match often played in rain and had six double faults.

    Davydenko wins

In Munich, Nikolay Davydenko of Russia denied Florian Mayer a first career title again when he defeated the German 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 in the BMW Open final on Sunday. Mayer had earlier lost to the Russian in the final in Sopot in 2006.

    Sania loses

In Madrid, Sania Mirza lost to her doubles partner Elena Vesnina 4-6, 3-6 in the first round of the Madrid Open on Sunday.

    India ninth

Jasmine Kaur Bajaj and Tahira Bhatti won their singles matches to help India beat seventh seed Hong Kong for the ninth place in the Asia-Oceania Junior Fed Cup u-16 tennis, here on Sunday.

It was no consolation for the Indian girls to have finished better than the boys who were placed 13th in the Junior Davis Cup the previous week, as they richly deserved a berth at least in the quarterfinals. The team had lost a close fight to Thailand in the league phase, and thus missed a chance to fight for a qualifier's spot for the World Group competition, to be staged later in the season.

The results (final): Australia bt Japan 2-0; Ninth place: India bt Hong Kong 2-1 (Jasmine Kaur Bajaj bt Eudice Wong Chong 6-2, 6-1; Tahira Bhatti bt Wing Man Vivian Lin 6-4, 6-4; Tahira Bhatti and Snehadevi Reddy conceded walkover to Cheng Katherine Ip and Wing Man Vivian Lin).

    India seeded fifth

India is seeded fifth and clubbed with fourth seed China, apart from New Zealand and Syria, for the league phase in the Asia-Oceania World junior uner-14 tennis championship to be played at Sarawak, Kuching, Malaysia, from Monday.

Korea, Australia and Japan have been given the first three seedings and the teams have been divided into four groups.

The top two teams from the groups will qualify for the quarterfinals and the best four from the region will make it to the World Group Final to be staged in Prostejov, Czech Republic, in August. Garvit Batra, Sumit Nagpal and Sahil Deshmukh will attempt to provide a solid performance for India, under the guidance of captain Sunil Yajaman.

Lee triumphs; maiden title for Porntip

In the much-awaited battle of two World No.1s, one past and one present, Lee Chong Wei was made to stretch before coming out stronger against Danish veteran Peter Gade.

On Sunday, the Malaysian favourite became the first winner of the $200,000 India Open Super Series badminton championship at the Siri Fort Sports Complex here, where he claimed the Commonwealth Games gold in October last.

The 21-12, 12-21, 21-15 victory in 62 minutes was worth $15,000 for the 28-year-old champion who now has three Super Series titles this year. Gade, eight years older to Lee, settled for $7,600, but went back with a feeling that he could have won.

The ladies crown went to unseeded Thai Porntip Buranaprasertsuk, who scored over third seed Korean Bae Youn Joo for the first time in three encounters for her maiden Super Series title. The 21-13, 21-16 triumph also earned Prontip $15,000 and left Joo with $7,600.

The much expected result in the men's title-match came only after an unexpected twist, with the 34-year-old Gade snatching a game away, something he had not managed in the last five meetings.

In fact, Gade led 6-2 in the decider to raise visions of repeating his only victory over the Malaysian that came in the 2009 Korea Super Series. But the gritty top seed won a long rally, then led 8-6 by winning six points on the trot and never trailed again.

'Comeback King' Ganguly back in IPL with Pune Warriors India

Ignored at this year's IPL auctions, former India captain Sourav Ganguly made a dramatic return in the cash-rich league on Tuesday signing for Pune Warriors India in place of an injured Ashish Nehra.

"I was approached by them yesterday and I've confirmed about my availability to them. I am leaving for Mumbai today and the details will be announced there," Ganguly told reporters on Tuesday. Ganguly is however unlikely to feature in Pune Warriors' match against Mumbai Indians on Wednesday.

Ganguly, who was captain of Kolkata Knight Riders for the first and third season was given a cold shoulder by Shah Rukh Khan co-owned franchise as well as nine others who didn't bid for him during the auctions.

The Pune Warriors are in the midst of a disastrous campaign having lost six consecutive matches under Yuvraj Singh's captaincy. With the batting looking depleted, the new franchise couldn't have thought for a better replacement as Ganguly brings with him vast experience.

Confirming the development, Pune Warriors team director Abhijit Sarkar said that roping in Ganguly was not a gamble and he would prove his worth with the former India captain being the "best cricketing brain" in the country.

"He is playing in IPL not for money but to prove a point. He deserves a lot of respect, but not the way he has been treated (by Kolkata Knight Riders)... He is the best cricketing brain in the country. Taking Ganguly is not a gamble," Sarkar explained.

Sarkar said their side was plagued by a lot of injuries and they thought of Ganguly.

"At the start of the tournament, Angelo Mathews, the best all-rounder, was ruled out. Australian T20 vice-captain Tim Paine, South African skipper Graeme Smith too are injured, while Ashish Nehra too was battling with injury. We waited for the Nehra's fitness report that came yesterday."

"We have been in talks for last two three days. Our team think-tank felt that Sourav Ganguly is the best possible option available so we went for him. He has been a fighter and a master of comebacks. We are very much confident that he will prove his worth."

Sarkar however said Ganguly would not be available for their next match against Mumbai Indians at Navi Mumbai on Wednesday.

"We welcome him on board. He is joining the side (in Navi Mumbai) this evening and will train with the coach and support staff. I don't think that he will be playing in our next match (against Mumbai Indians) tomorrow."

Watson wins Zurich Classic in playoff

NEW ORLEANS (Louisiana): Bubba Watson claimed his second US PGA Tour title of 2011 Sunday, edging Webb Simpson at the second hole of sudden death to win the Zurich Classic.

Watson holed a three-foot birdie putt at the second playoff hole, adding the title to the Farmers Insurance crown he claimed at Torrey Pines in January.

Watson's 329-yard tee shot had narrowly missed the water, landing in a slim bunker between the fairway and the water.

Watson hit his second shot from the bunker 210 yards to the front of the green on the par-5 18th at TPC Louisiana.

Moto GP may soon follow Formula One into India

Close on the heels of Formula One making its debut in India this October, another motorsport biggie is eyeing for a pit-stop in New Delhi.

Moto GP (world motorbike championship) organizers are keenly watching the events unfold in Delhi and with an Indian team, Mahindra Racing, having already made its debut in the 125cc category, bike enthusiasts in the country could have a lot to cheer for in the near future.

"We definitely want to come to India," declared Manuel Arroyo, managing director of Dorna Sports, who are the event mangers of Moto GP. "We are in the first stage of talks and if India, which is hosting the F1 race in October, manages to fulfill the conditions (for staging a Moto GP), then a Moto GP in Delhi is not far off," he told TOI on Sunday.

The 51-year-old Spaniard is unperturbed that the sport has not much of a following in India. He is banking on the increasing number of bike users in the country and the entry of Mahindra Racing for the event to take root. "The Indian team's presence will go a big way in getting the knowledge of the sport to India," he added. "The objective is to make it a worldwide event."

Currently, 18 races are held annually in 13 countries. A new destination in Texas will be added to the calendar in 2013 while new venues in Abu Dhabi, Brazil and Argentina are also on the anvil. "We may increase it to 19 races but the plan to seal it at 18," he says.

117 cameras for a single race!

While admitting that the Moto GP is some miles away from becoming a worldwide sporting phenomenon, he was quick to point out the reach of the event. The Dorna boss claims that it reached 233 million homes in 207 countries last year.

A spectacle made possible by his team's production unit which has admirably kept pace with technology. As many as 117 cameras, many of them hi-definition, track every move during a race.

Interestingly, every rider in the Moto GP race has three cameras fixed on the bike (which in effect means 78 on-board cameras). There are as many as 20 stationed at strategic points on the race track while two track the pits and one is placed in a helicopter that hovers above.

"We have to ensure that it is in the best interests of the riders, the teams, the fans, the viewers, everybody," says Arroyo.

Exciting fare in prospect at Ipoh

Edition-20 of the Azlan Shah hockey tournament unfolds on Thursday. Pakistan takes on New Zealand in the opening encounter in the seven-team competition viewed as the showpiece of Asia.

What invests this chapter with greater relevance is the fact that the event signals the start of the quest for an Olympic berth for five of the seven teams.

Minus Pakistan, which has ensured a place in next year's Olympics on the strength of its gold medal triumph at the Guangzhou Asian Games, and Great Britain, the host, the rest in the field — India, Australia, South Korea, New Zealand and Malaysia — are in various stages of preparation for the qualifiers.

India is here in search of a hat-trick of triumphs. It is also in line for a fourth successive final. Assessed realistically, however, the chances this time are grim, given the quality of the opposition and the team's frailties.

Injuries to Tushar Khandekar, Rajpal Singh and Bharath Chikkara have created weak spots. The decision to keep out Sandeep and Sardara is a subject for a critical debate.

A heavy burden is cast on the new leader Arjun Halappa. How well he marshals the available resources remains to be seen. He needs to rely on the support of Gurbaj Singh in the midfield, Shivendra Singh in attack, the energetic Mahadik in deep defence, and on the goalkeepers, Adrian and Chetri.

How successful Diwakar Ram will be in penalty-corner conversions remains to be seen. Of the others, focus should be on Roshan Minz, a hugely talented player, and Danish Mujtaba, the link-man.

    Balanced team

A superficial glance over the list of players is sufficient to convince one that Great Britain emerges as the most balanced. Matt Daly's return gives the frontline a sharper edge. A combination that includes players of the calibre of Richard Alexander, Jonty Clarke, the Mantells, Richard and Simon, and James Tindell has all the ingredients of a champion.

Another side bound to cause ripples is Pakistan, notwithstanding the controversies that had plagued the squad before departure. Sohail Abbas, Rehan Buttt, Saleem Abbasi and Waseem Ahmed — all with impeccable credentials — enhance the stature of the squad under the leadership of Muhammad Imran with the Dutch coach, Michel van den Heuvel, adding his ingenuous in-puts.

The Kiwi professionalism and their indomitable spirit are well known. They have a splendid amalgam of youth like James Coughlan and seasoned campaigners like Dean Couzins, Phil Burrows and Simon Child.

Beset with injuries the Aussies may not be at their best. Yet they are decidedly a threat to all under the renowned and redoubtable Ric Charlesworth. Brent Dancer and Jonathan Charlesworth are two colts carrying a famous surname in the squad. Christopher Cierello will be the cynosure in the Aussie penalty corner drills.

The joint winners with India last year, the Koreans, are never to be underestimated.

Malaysia is a difficult unit to conquer at home. But after the silver medal in Guangzhou, it is a different lot, and is very much in the hunt. If the Malaysians can transform their sporadic incandescence into a level of consistency a cup victory cannot be dismissed as a pipedream.

The aficionados here wait with bated breath. What more, the contestants are raring to go.

Barcelona through to final at Real's expense

Barcelona reached its second Champions League final in three years after a 1-1 draw with Real Madrid at the Nou Camp in their semifinal second leg clash on Tuesday night, which saw it progress 3-1 on aggregate.

Needing to overturn a 2-0 home defeat, Real had to attack but it never managed a sustained threat on the Barca goal and fell behind to a Pedro strike in the 54th minute.

Marcelo replied 10 minutes later — but it was only a consolation goal for Real.

Real found it hard to be gracious in defeat with assistant coach Aitor Karanka saying a disallowed goal early in the second-half by Madrid striker Gonzalo Higuain supported coach Jose Mourinho's controversial claims that Barcelona was favoured by referees.

“I think that after all that has been said this week, everyone saw today what we had been going on about (with regard to Higuain's goal),” said Karanka, who stood in for Mourinho in the dugout as he was suspended after being sent from the bench last week.

An unmarked Sergio Busquets headed straight at 'keeper Iker Casillas from a corner, but generally the game was simmering and it was Messi who threatened to bring it to the boil in the run-up to half-time.

The Real defenders were bunching up as they tried to halt his forays and he tested Casillas with a couple of shots from the edge of the area.

The shot-stopper then made an excellent save to deny a curling David Villa strike.

After the break Real attacked with renewed vigour and Barca looked edgy. In a strange decision by the referee, Higuain's goal was ruled out for a foul by Ronaldo on Mascherano, although he himself had been pushed by Gerard Pique.

The slippery conditions were also making it difficult for the Barca defence, but the more Real attacked, the greater chance that it would be caught on the counter-attack, which is what eventually happened.

Dani Alves ran down the wing and played the ball inside to Iniesta who found Pedro with a brilliant through ball. Pedro, in turn, finished calmly with just the 'keeper to beat.

The contest looked over, but Real kept pushing and got its reward when Marcelo swept the ball home. Di Maria got past Mascherano and while he was unlucky to see his shot come back off the post, he kept his composure to set up Marcelo.

The result: Barcelona 1 (Pedro 54) drew with Real Madrid 1 (Marcelo 64); Barcelona wins 3-1 on aggregate .
